What is a life coach?
I was contemplating the question “Why do people feel safer, and more grounded at work and not in their own personal lives? Why do we seek to escape from our jobs and not somewhere else? And the conclusion I came to was “Because we spend years and decades, training how to do a job. But no one really trains us about life”. We have been taught what face to show to others and what words to choose when talking to others. Our parents and guardians made sure we did not hurt other people’s feelings. We have been well-trained not to embarrass ourselves in society. But all that comes at a cost. A cost no one has ever told us about. Probably because, those who were responsible for raising us, haven’t realised it.
Teaching us to keep our appearances, to keep grinding, and to maintain toxic relationships is extremely damaging for us. And this is the cost that no one told us about. The cost of our own personal well-being, the cost of our own sanity.
We are expected to just go through life, to discard our own wishes, needs and wants. Other people have taught us to make the biggest sacrifice of all, to diminish our light just to please others. Everyone expects us to cheer others up and lift them up but we should never show how good we are, in case someone feels inferior.
A life coach is a person that can help others to tap into their potential and to start having a more fulfilled life.
What problems life coach can help me solve?
- Limiting beliefs – a good life coach can show what limited beliefs sabotage and hinder us. A good life coach will ask you questions to provoke a deep exploration of your ideas and vision.
- Fear – a good life coach can show us how to overcome our fears. This is achieved by looking at your life patterns and finding ways how to break out of them and create new ones. The new patterns should be able to support you towards reaching your goals.
- Flexibility – a good life coach can help you see the bigger picture, which helps in being more flexible with plans, approaches etc. Keeping an eye on the bigger picture and paying attention to the details is an important skill we need to acquire.
- General life outlook – a good life coach can help you change your outlook on life and as a result bring a much calmer and more fulfilled life. This is achieved by looking at your value system and guiding you to its improvement. Our value systems play a much bigger role than we realise.
- Results – a good life coach can help you reach your goals, by helping you reach insights, you never thought you had. Also, a good life coach will keep you accountable, to make sure that you reach your goals within a reasonable time. This is achieved by looking at possible roadblocks and ways to remove them.
What a life coach can do for me?
- Can guide you to see how your past behaviour has affected your life until now and through this insight, help you to start making different decisions
- Helps you to gain more clarity about the steps, that you need to take, toward a more fulfilled life
- Can support you in healing emotional wounds
- Can guide you towards becoming more balanced within yourself
- Can guide toward true empowerment
- Hold you accountable for taking the steps toward your goal
A life coach can become your best friend who will not feed you lies only to protect your feelings. You will hear the harsh truth but it will not be delivered in a judgemental way but with the intention for you to see what is preventing you from having the life you desire and to be able to take the necessary steps towards it.
There are different life coaches, that specialize in different areas of our lives. There are self-love coaches, grievance coaches, career coaches, executive coaches, marketing coaches, family coaches, coaches for teenagers, coaches for men, and coaches for women. The choice is big and you will need to decide what coach to hire to overcome your issues and turn your life around.
However, do not expect a life coach to be your mental health therapist or to diagnose you with a mental health condition. Life coaches are there to support you and guide you through life.
